Ballina man made bogus charity collection to fund his boozing

A 24-year-old man who pretended to collect money for a charity walk — when in fact he was collecting the money so he could buy alcohol — was before Ballina District Court this week for a “mean type of crime”, making gain and causing loss by deception.

On Friday September 23 arts venues throughout the country throw open their doors for an evening of public participation in the arts. At the Ballina Arts Centre they have an array of events for the public to try out. Be it music, dance, film or printmaking, there is something for everyone.

Come Back to Mayo for Culture Night

Ballina is about to become home to Ireland’s newest world class cultural institution. Work is well under way on the refurbishment of the Thomas Manly Deane designed Provincial Bank on the town’s main street. Next year the stunning listed building will become the permanent base for Mayo County Council’s Jackie Clarke Collection, which will be one of Ireland’s top tourist attractions. It is not surprising then that Ballina will be a focal point for Culture Night 2011, tonight September 23.

Culture night a huge success

On September 24 a total of 20 towns, cities, and counties across Ireland took part in Culture Night. In Mayo the evening was a countywide event giving people in all parts of the county the opportunity to go along to their local venue and check the wealth of activity that goes on there. Not surprisingly, people did just that. In the past five years Culture Night has become a national phenomenon and in 2009 Mayo was delighted to be part of the event. In a unique take on events the occasion in Mayo became a countywide event, a first for culture night. Feedback from venues and audience was extremely positive.

Irish Missionaries expo at Ballina Library

A photographic exhibition of the Irish Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) is currently running in the public library in Pearse Street, Ballina. The wide range of photographs depicts the early years of MSC missionaries in Ireland, and their departure to Papua New Guinea, to South Africa, to Venezuela, and more recently to Russia.
